Meet the Manchester Terrier

​The Manchester Terrier is a sleek, intelligent, and spirited breed that thrives as an active and loyal companion. Whether in a city apartment, a suburban home or a large farm homestead, this breed fits best with families or individuals who enjoy including their dog in daily life.

The Toy and Standard Manchester Terriers are two sizes of the same breed, sharing the same elegant appearance, intelligent temperament, and energetic personality. The only difference is size: Toys weigh up to 12 pounds, while Standards range from 12 to 22 pounds.

 

Some owners find that Standards show more "Terrier" personality where "Toys" show more alert, protective companion qualities--but this is dependent heavily on the pedigree of the individual dog. Both varieties overall are equally alert, affectionate, and trainable—your choice comes down to personal preference, lifestyle, and whether you prefer a more compact companion or a sturdier, slightly larger dog.

Personality & Temperament

Manchester Terriers are alert, devoted, and curious. They form strong bonds with their people and often choose a favorite person to shadow around the house. They’re affectionate with their families but can be reserved with strangers. Early socialization helps them grow into confident, well-adjusted dogs.​ A Manchester, Toy or Standard, is often found under your closest blanket snuggling up. Overall, Manchesters tend to be very adaptable to all speeds and styles of living, as long as their owners are active and engaged with them every day.

Trainability & Exercise Needs

Manchester Terriers are fast learners and love a challenge. They respond well to positive, consistent training methods and enjoy activities like obedience, rally, agility, and scent work.

 

Because they’re smart and sometimes a bit cheeky, structure and engagement help bring out their best. Manchesters need regular physical and mental exercise. A brisk walk, some playtime, or short training sessions each day will keep them happy and well-behaved. Without enough activity, they can become restless and find their own entertainment—sometimes in the form of barking or digging.

Manchesters also make excellent watchdogs, alert but generally not yappy when trained. It is important to note that their Terrier lineage makes them unlikely to be compatible with homes that have small animals. Many Manchesters can learn to live with cats if raised together, but this should be communicated with the breeder so that a puppy with less prey drive can be matched.

Grooming and Care

​

With a short, glossy coat, the Manchester Terrier is easy to care for and considered "Wash and Wear." A quick weekly brushing with a stiff boar bristle brush, the occasional bath, and regular nail trims are usually all that’s needed. Manchester Terrier nails grow fast, thick and are remarkably hard. Owners should be prepared to grind/dremel nails at home weekly to biweekly to keep them at a safe length.

They are naturally clean dogs with minimal odor and low shedding. Like all dogs, they benefit from regular vet care, a balanced diet, and dental maintenance.
