Manchesters in Lure Coursing
Coursing sports tap directly into the Manchester Terrier’s historical purpose as a fast, efficient vermin hunter. Designed to test speed, agility, and instinct rather than obedience, these events allow Manchester Terriers to express their natural chase drive in a safe, structured environment. The breed’s combination of acceleration, focus, and athletic movement makes coursing and Fast CAT especially satisfying outlets, offering a glimpse of the instincts that originally defined the Manchester Terrier as a working dog.
Fast CAT (Coursing Ability Test) is a simplified, timed version of lure coursing open to all AKC-registered dogs and Canine Partners. Dogs run individually down a straight 100-yard course chasing a lure, earning points based on speed and titles based on cumulative performance. Because Fast CAT requires minimal training and no jumping or obstacles, it is one of the most accessible entry points into performance sports and a favorite among first-time competitors.
Traditional Coursing Ability Tests (CAT) and lure coursing events involve longer courses with turns that more closely simulate real pursuit. While full lure coursing is limited to eligible breeds, CAT events are open to a wide range of dogs and allow participants to experience curved courses and sustained chase. Manchester Terriers often excel in both Fast CAT and CAT due to their speed, focus, and strong prey drive, making these sports a natural fit for the breed’s historical purpose.
Coursing and Fast CAT events in the U.S. are governed by the American Kennel Club, with additional opportunities offered through regional clubs. Titles earned in these sports are recorded through the AKC and are widely recognized across the dog sport community.
